Overview

According to the World Bank, almost 200 million people in Asia moved to its cities in the first decade of 21st century. Cities, as the major economic growth driver, on one hand, generate over 70% of the world’s GDP; on the other hand, cities consume 78% of energy globally and emit over 60% of carbon emission. Green Infrastructure in the filed of renewable energy, energy efficiency and waste management is essential for cities to achieve environmental, social and economic development goals. Despite the huge demands from sub-national governments on green infrastructure, the project pipeline is relatively small due to various reasons, namely political engagement, the feasibility of technical solutions, investment etc. Giving the favourable economic and political environment in Asia, R20 is working on developing a sustainable value chain of green infrastructure project development and financing to engage public sector, technical solutions providers, blended finance joining forces to generate a portfolio of green deal flows, eventually to enhance the attractiveness of green infrastructure as the new asset class for private investors, like pension funds, insurance etc. in order to unlock the billions investment opportunities.
